BEIJING, CHINA - Christie, a global leader in visual solutions for business, entertainment and industry, is pleased to announce the Christie Roadster S+20K and Christie CP2000-ZX models were selected to project dynamic visuals for the opening ceremony at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games. The ceremony was held on August 8, 2008, just after 8:00pm China Standard Time in the Beijing National Stadium and featured the most complex and extensive use of projected visuals in the history of the sporting event.

“This is the first time that we have used such a massive number of projectors for the opening ceremony - a combination of approximately 150 Christie Roadster S+20K and Christie CP2000-ZX models, with brightness levels up to 20,000 ANSI lumens,” comments Sha Xiaolan, chief lighting designer, Olympics Opening and Closing Ceremony Committee. “As the projected visuals played a pivotal role in the opening ceremony, the visual solution was also the most extensive and complicated in the history of the Games. Christie projectors maintained their excellent performance and reliability from day one of the rehearsal, right through to the live event.”

The three-and-a-half-hour opening ceremony included four parts: opening addresses; performances; entrance of athletes; and lighting of the main flame. Centered on the theme of “Civilization and Harmony,” the extravagant performances were designed by renowned film director, Zhang Yimou, and aimed to convey the “conception of harmony from an international perspective.” In order to uphold the artistic integrity and complex design elements for the show, the projection technology needed to endure rugged use, as well as high temperature and humidity levels.

Working together with Wincom Technology Development Co., Ltd., one of Christie’s most valued and prominent Business Products partner in China, 84 Christie Roadster S+20K 3-chip DLP® projectors were provided for the spectator area in the newly-constructed Beijing National Stadium. These incredibly bright projectors, outputting 20,000 ANSI lumens, are the de facto standard for rental/staging with a rugged design for durability and ease of operation.

Adding another creative element to this spectacular event, Christie partnered with Beijing Time Antaeus Media Tech. Co., Ltd., to provide 63 Christie CP2000-ZX models for the ceremonies - the brightest all-in-one digital cinema projector in its class. The unique performance using Christie’s acclaimed DLP Cinema® projectors, was the first-of-its-kind and illustrated the flexibility of Christie’s range of visual solutions. Following the ceremonies, the projectors will be deployed in theaters across China, as the country continues to expand its conversion from film to digital.

To ensure exceptional image quality for the live event, Christie’s engineering team performed extensive testing off-site to verify conformance with all visual parameters set by the Games’ audio/visual committee. The projectors were also tested under extreme temperature and humidity levels to ensure optimal performance and reliability in the hot and humid Beijing summer climate. The technical team also spent more than two months on-site at the Beijing National Stadium working with the visual department daily on the installation and fine-tuning prior to the Games.

“The 2008 Beijing Summer Games opening ceremony was one of the most spectacular events ever produced. Christie projectors will also be used for the closing ceremony on August 24, 2008 as well as the Beijing 2008 Paralympics Opening and Closing Ceremony on September 6th and 17th, 2008 respectively.

Los Angeles, CA - IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience continued its unprecedented box office performance with the highest grossing second weekend in IMAX history. The IMAX release grossed $4.6 million on 94 domestic IMAX screens, from Friday July 25 through Sunday July 27, bringing the film’s domestic total to $16.3 million.

Internationally, the film grossed approximately $1.6 million in 28 IMAX® theatres, for a per screen average of $57,800, bringing the international total to $2.8 million. Through Sunday, the worldwide IMAX total was $19.2 million and is expected to cross the $20 million milestone today.

The Dark Knight is continuing to create new Batman fans nationwide with many repeat customers experiencing it in IMAX theatres,” said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. “The box office performance of the film in IMAX’s format demonstrates how The IMAX Experience® transforms an already exciting movie into an event that lasts beyond the first weekend.”

The IMAX release of The Dark Knight continued its opening box office record streak overseas. Highlights from this past weekend include London’s BFI IMAX theatre, which hosted the film’s European premiere, and posted a record international IMAX opening of $221K for the weekend. The film also broke opening weekend records for an IMAX title in Holland, South Africa, Turkey and the UAE.

“With nearly $58,000 per screen average for the weekend, moviegoers are clearly drawn to IMAX theatres,” said Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. “Results in the holdover markets dropped a mere 13%, which demonstrates the resilience this film has in the IMAX format”.

“Many IMAX theatres have been operating at nearly full capacity throughout the week and into the second weekend, and the additional IMAX locations that opened internationally over the weekend have reported many individual box office records,” said IMAX Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs Richard L. PARIS, France & BURBANK, CA - Thomson - the worldwide leader in video solutions for the Communication, Media & Entertainment (CME) industries - today announced that its Technicolor Services division has provided a full array of industry-leading laboratory and digital services to the top 10 films driving the record-smashing North American box office for the weekend of July 18 - 20.

Technicolor provided key services to every film in the top 10 of the record-breaking session. The unprecedented results, for a three-day non-holiday weekend, were led by Warner Bros.’ The Dark Knight, which broke all records over a non-holiday, three-day weekend grossing an official $158.3 million. Other new opening films Technicolor served include Mamma Mia!, and Space Chimps. Mamma Mia! rewrote the records books and became the top opener in film history for a musical. The domestic box office racked up an unprecedented $250 million or more in ticket sales making July 18 - 20 the biggest three-day weekend ever in terms of total grosses.

Technicolor provided a combination of best-in-class creative and technical services in both the film and digital arena - including front-end negative processing and dailies; digital intermediates; theatrical release printing; and digital cinema services. Technicolor provided digital intermediates and digital cinema services to half of the 10 highest grossing films; and it provided theatrical release printing to over three-quarters of the top 10 films - through a combination of domestic and international theatrical release prints.

Technicolor’s Rome laboratory provided digital intermediate film-out services for Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. Technicolor also provided worldwide film prints for Mamma Mia!, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army and Kung Fu Panda.

Canadian exhibitor Cineplex Entertainment has signed a long-term agreement to install a minimum of 175 3D systems from LA-based technology company RealD.

Cineplex currently has 41 such systems in operation; however, the expansion is contingent on Cineplex’s entering a digital deployment agreement with Digital Cinema Implementation Partners (DCIP), the technology acquisition joint venture set-up by US cinema circuits Regal, AMC, and Cinemark.

Earlier this month, Cinemark signed a much larger similar deal with RealD that will add 1,500 3D screens to its circuit. That deal too is contingent on definitive agreements between DCIP and the major US distributors over such issues as digital print costs. If said agreements are finalized, RealD will be on track to surpass the 5000-system milestone.

The moves anticipate an unprecedented release slate of more than a dozen 3D titles over the next 18 months including DreamWorks Animation’s Monsters vs. Aliens, 20th Century Fox’s Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and James Cameron’s Avatar. The majority of the Cineplex installations will be completed in 2009.

In a joint release, DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and other studio chiefs as well as Cineplex president and CEO Ellis Jacob and RealD chairman and CEO Michael Lewis enthused on the potential renaissance in exhibition. RealD compared the impact of 3D with the advent of colour film.

The technology company claims to be the “global leader in 3D”, with 90 per cent of the worldwide digital 3D market and 97 per cent of the North American market. Its systems operate in 27 countries.
